UK AEO Certified Practitioner Programme
The complete route to AEO(C), AEO(S) and AEO(F) with HMRC: criteria, evidence packs, the audit, and who in your organisation does what.
£350
View programmeAEO is the internationally recognised mark of a trusted trader, granted in the UK by HMRC as either AEO Customs Simplifications or AEO Security and Safety. Authorised businesses face fewer physical and documentary checks, receive priority treatment when controls are needed, and benefit from mutual recognition with partner customs administrations.
The criteria are demanding, so we work with you from the first assessment through to authorisation and keep you compliant afterwards, including through the changes brought in by Union Customs Code reform. Alongside the advisory work we run practitioner programmes for five national schemes and a self-assessment workspace built on the WCO structure.
Where you stand against each criterion today, what is missing, and what it will take to close it.
The self-assessment questionnaire, the evidence pack, and preparation for the audit visit.
Classification, origin and valuation practice, declaration accuracy, and internal audit of your customs records.
Which arrangements your status reaches, what they deliver in practice, and where they do not apply.
Union Customs Code reform, Trust and Check Trader, and the PAS 41201 intermediaries standard, for teams advising clients now.
Role-based programmes for operations, finance and security teams, with assessment and certification.

View programmeA practical pre-application checklist for UK AEO status, covering the evidence HMRC expects against each criterion and the most common reasons applications stall.
AEO(C), AEO(S), and the combined AEO(F) status explained in plain terms; what each one actually covers, and how to work out which one your business needs.
Most AEO guides talk about five simplified criteria. The WCO's own Self-Assessment Questionnaire actually runs on 13 lettered categories, A through M; here's what each one covers.
The twelve Minimum Security Criteria CBP assesses every C-TPAT applicant against, explained in plain terms, and how they map onto AEO's five criteria for operators comparing both.
Tell us where you are and what you are trying to reach, and we will tell you what the work involves and whether we are the right people for it.
With the resurgent discussions on Brexit and rejoining the EU, trade remains a key focus. Trade friction rarely announces itself, and from a business perspective it arrives as a held or delayed container, a buyer who stops reordering, a margin that disappears under regulatory conditions that keep diverging between trade partners. The firms that had to absorb the last decade of change, from 2016 to 2026, were not all lucky. The firms who created their luck were the ones who could prove how they control their supply chain.
Here is what that control may have looked like for three different businesses.
£27bn
Lost UK goods exports
The fall in total UK goods exports in 2022 attributed to the post-Brexit trading agreement, all of it on EU trade.
16,400
Firms that stopped exporting to the EU
Around 14% of UK businesses that had been exporting to the EU stopped altogether once the new rules took effect in January 2021.
30% vs 0%
Smallest firms against largest
EU export values fell by 30% for firms with six or fewer staff. For the largest firms, researchers found no measurable effect at all.

Declarations, commodity codes and origin evidence cost much the same whether the order is large or small, so margins on the smallest EU orders stop working first. Buyers see AEO trusted trader status as evidence that a small supplier will not become their customs problem.
Read the full storyThe firm consolidates groupage for dozens of clients, books capacity, and acts as customs intermediary for most of them.
One client's incomplete data can hold a trailer carrying fifteen other clients' freight, and the risk of every delay is attributed to the forwarder whoever actually caused it. AEO(F) and C-TPAT turn that exposure into priority treatment instead.
Read the full storySeveral legal entities with thousands of SKUs, an ERP that touches customs data, and an in-house team running UK, EU, and US flows in parallel.
A single authorisation no longer travels across UK, EU and US regimes that have diverged. AEO and C-TPAT provide coherent control frameworks across jurisdictions, recognised on both sides of the Atlantic.
Read the full storyThe Mutual Recognition Arrangement between C-TPAT and AEO has been in place since 2012, and UK AEO holders benefit from arrangements with the United States, Canada, Japan, China, Singapore, New Zealand, and the EEA and EFTA states. One honest caveat belongs here: the UK and EU have still not concluded an AEO mutual recognition arrangement, so UK status does not yet trigger automatic EU-side facilitation.
The underlying discipline still travels across every border without it: documented controls, clean data, a supply chain you can evidence. Firms that can show it are the ones still trading when the rules move again, and they are the ones ready the day an arrangement is signed.
Compliance record, systems, financial solvency, competence, and security & safety: every module and every SAQ section maps to one of these, not to a generic customs syllabus.
Manufacturer, exporter, importer, freight forwarder, customs broker, carrier or warehouse operator: the course tells you which AEO status fits your role and why.
Draft your answers section by section, reveal a model response when you're ready, and certify each of the five SAQ sections as you go.
Trust and Check Trader, the EU Customs Data Hub, and the UK's new PAS 41201 intermediaries standard, covered as a dedicated briefing, not an afterthought.
In under 90 seconds: what the 2026 UCC reform actually changed, and why AEO stays the right route into trusted trader status for most SME trade and compliance teams.
Read the full breakdownEvery AEO application is assessed against the WCO’s own 13-category (A–M) SAQ. Work through each section, get a tip on what assessors actually look for, draft your answer, then reveal a model response to check your work, and certify the section once you’re ready. Included with the AEO Certified Practitioner Programme.
